GTD ‘projects’: Why I have only one

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

I’m a fairly new scholar in the art of GTD. Of course I have my problems — with getting started, with sticking to it, and with managing my lists (i.e. my tools). For this post, I’m going to focus on my take on projects. Or, I should say, project (singular).

Many GTDers are commenting on the problems with deciding the proper width and breadth of their projects; some people try to measure and compare the number of projects they have on their desk and then try to decide what that number means in terms of their GTD-fu. (more…)

My inboxes are empty

Friday, April 20th, 2007

I literally can’t remember if I’ve been in this situation before: the inboxes of all my email accounts (personal and work) are empty. It looks very strange, or rather, very unusual.

This is basically Flip My Inbox Mark Two. Mark One was pushing the oldest stuff to the top with the intention to work on my guilt and self-motivation. The GTD concept of Getting In to Empty was then next to be implemented — and now it is. Let’s see if I can keep it this way.

Flip my inbox

Monday, January 8th, 2007

For some time now I have been wanting to implement GTD in my life. Now I’ve committed to actually doing it this year, by way of the yearly commitment plan with my manager. The commitment plan itself is a bit of American coca-cola culture that just goes with the job, but I suppose it’s what you make of it.

One of the first things I’ve decided to do — and this is an easy and effective one — is to flip my inbox. Now, the newest mail is ticking in at the bottom of the list, and the oldest items are at the top. That ought to keep me motivated to weed out the crud in my inbox!

In the Palm of my Hand

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

Recently I blogged about GTD tools, or rather absence of such.

Since then, I found out that the superannuated Palm V which I had stashed away isn’t quite dead after all. Using expert advice, I found that its battery (which I was hitherto convinced was in need of replacement) is in fact perfectly functional. This in spite of its not having received a single electron in perhaps five years!

So naturally, I recommenced building the ideal software lineup. May be that David Allen makes do with the standard package, but I can’t resist the urge to embellish the gadget with even more sub-gadgets (for instance, a mute button is essential, and it’s always handy to be able to make a freehand sketch). And lo and behold! What I could not find last time I used a Palm, I found within days this time around! (more…)

or, “Problems Getting Started with Getting Things Done”.

I’m looking for concrete, physical day-to-day management tools for managing the GTD method.

I really like it when things are nicely ordered in tidy conceptual bins, lists, or systems (said the programmer), and that is easily enough applied to projects that do not grow over a certain size.

Life, as a whole, is well beyond that ‘certain size’. Hence, I am looking for a capable and mobile brain-dump tool. Any tips? (more…)
